Spring Exhibition 2012

Our Spring exhibition was on Sunday 25th March in the Hawkwelll Village Hall, Hawkwell.

It was opened to the public at 10.00 am. There were 110 pictures hung by members of the Rayleigh Art Group plus numerous Portfolios for sale too. Also we had two members selling cards, one of which was fund raising for Breast Cancer.

This year, as in past years, we were selling refreshments but unlike years gone past we had homemade cakes and sausage rolls for sale, together with biscuits for those who were not indulging themselves. This proved very popular with the public and members alike.

As this is our Golden Anniversary year, we ran a competition earlier in the year with ‘Golden’ in the title of our work, and we exhibited these pieces of art work also. These were not necessarily for sale but we felt it would be a nice thing to show the public our work commemorating this 50th year.

Ian Smith Demonstration

On Wednesday March 14th about 35 members attended an enjoyable demonstration by Leigh artist Ian Smith. He painted an unusual large picture of goldfish and lily pads in a pond using acrylic paints. Ian also brought along several finished pieces of work which some thought were quite ‘Hockneyesque’ in style. Perhaps because several of us have seen the current David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy and so the style was fresh in our minds.

Ian made a point of saying that we should beware of copying exact colours or compositions from photographs or even from life – just put down whatever you feel looks right! Ian was accompanied by another well known local artist, Sheila Appleton, who kept us entertained with many light hearted anecdotes from her colourful life.

A very interesting and enjoyable evening.

Many thanks to Vicky Coppard for the report (sorry no photos).
